Solid state lasers are especially suited for fine cutting due to their beam quality and short wave length. The beam can be focused to a very small diameter with extreme precision. This allows for thin cut widths of down to 10 µm (0.0004 in.) with a very small heat affected zone. This is important for closed, thin walled hollow bodies. The parts will not be deformed.
Welding is the process of joining similar or certain dissimilar materials. In contrary of conventional welding methods, the regulated heat generated by the laser beam is delivered to the piece without the need of any additional material.
Drilling with solid state lasers is a thermal removal process. Due to the strong focused laser beam with high energy density, material is melted and evaporated. As a result of the evaporation and assist gas pressure, the material is thrown out of the hole.
One of the process steps in manufacturing of connecting rods includes separating of the crank bore. There are two basic ways of achieving this: Mechanical cut and separation with pressure. Separating with pressure also referred to as "cracking" is the most economical method since it requires almost half of the steps.
