One of the process steps in manufacturing of connecting rods includes separating of the crank bore. There are two basic ways of achieving this: Mechanical cut and separation with pressure. Separating with pressure also referred to as "cracking" is the most economical method since it requires almost half of the steps. Before the actual "cracking" can be performed, a preliminary procedure must be done involving machining of a parting line inside the crank bore. This parting line provides a focal point for the fracturing stress which controls the location of the break. There are two popular methods of achieving the parting line:
Laser scribing the connecting rods is the newest method and allows a reduced set up and production time. No need to change the mechanical tools between different types of materials or thickness, and no wear and tear of mechanical tools. There is no damage to the finished crank bore with laser processing which could be a problem with other processing methods. If you believe you have an application for our lasers we would be more than happy to hear from you. Please complete and submit our application form. |
